Polish General Staff Reports on Strengthening Border With Belarus

The General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces has published a report on the implementation of the “Eastern Shield” program, aimed at strengthening the border with Belarus and Russia.

According to the General Staff, engineering and technical measures were carried out last year along a 60-kilometer section. In particular, barriers were built along a 10-kilometer stretch, and 13 storage sites were created along a 50-kilometer section for the rapid deployment of counter-mobility assets, with terrain prepared for their installation.

This year, work is planned along a 200-kilometer section. Barriers will be installed along 20 kilometers, while storage and installation sites for counter-mobility assets will be prepared along the remaining 180 kilometers.

Measures were also taken last year to reinforce border crossings. Work was carried out to enable the rapid blocking of five border crossings, and preparations were conducted at a further 12 sites.

In 2025, 38 real estate properties were acquired to expand engineering infrastructure. This year, plans include the purchase of 45 land plots for storage sites and 150 real estate properties.

The program also предусматривает the procurement of engineering equipment to expand the construction capabilities of army units. Seven new base transceiver stations were commissioned to improve communications, and expansion of the telecommunications network will continue this year.

In 2025, more than 870 million zlotys (about $240 million) were allocated from the Defense Ministry budget for the implementation of the “Eastern Shield,” excluding EU funding. This year, around 500 million zlotys (about $140 million) are expected to be allocated, with additional EU funding anticipated under the SAFE instrument.
