Nasha Sprava / Belarusian Christian Democrats Faction Will Not Participate In Coordination Council Elections

The “Nasha Sprava” / Belarusian Christian Democrats faction has announced its decision not to participate in elections to the Coordination Council, stating that it believes the body currently lacks real political influence.

“The ‘Nasha Sprava’ / Belarusian Christian Democrats faction does not consider it appropriate to take part in the election campaign to the Coordination Council in its current format.

This decision is not a rejection of political responsibility. On the contrary, it is linked to the need to state openly that, in its current model, the Coordination Council does not possess sufficient role, powers, or real political influence to become a полноценный representative body of Belarusian democratic forces”, — said in a statement published on Facebook by Vitaly Rymasheuski.

The faction calls for reform of the Coordination Council and strengthening of its role.

“We believe that today the main task should not be procedure for the sake of procedure, but strengthening the role of the Coordination Council, redistributing real influence, and creating a broader and more inclusive system of interaction between political structures, civil society, independent initiatives, the expert community, and representatives”, the statement said.

The “Nasha Sprava” / Belarusian Christian Democrats faction calls on democratic forces to unite and engage in dialogue to expand participation in politically significant decision-making, and also states that it remains open to joint work “for the benefit of strengthening the Belarusian democratic movement”.

Elections to the Coordination Council will take place on May 11–17. Participation has already been declined by the Razam party organizing committee, as well as the Prokopiev–Egorov bloc.
