Military-Political Situation And Release Of Political Prisoners Discussed As Tsikhanouskaya Meets Meloni

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome on 10 March.

Tsikhanouskaya thanked Italy for its active support of the Belarusian democratic forces and noted that Italy remains a key participant in the international coalition supporting democratic Belarus and an example of European solidarity, the Office of Tsikhanouskaya reported.

The head of the United Transitional Cabinet informed Meloni about the process of releasing political prisoners, cooperation with the U.S. president and the European Union on this issue, as well as the work of the International Humanitarian Fund and Belarusian human rights initiatives that assist those subjected to repression and their families. Tsikhanouskaya called on Italy to join these efforts.

The sides also discussed the military-political situation and the participation of the Lukashenka regime in supporting Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Tsikhanouskaya noted that the regime uses Belarus as a platform for destabilizing regional security.

She also spoke about hybrid attacks by the Lukashenka regime against European Union countries and how they affect the overall security of European states.

Tsikhanouskaya informed Meloni about cooperation between Belarusian democratic forces and Ukraine, including the results of her latest meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and called on Italy to continue providing assistance to Ukraine.

“It was a sincere and substantive conversation. Prime Minister Meloni supports the Belarusian people and our work for democratic change. We paid significant attention not only to geopolitical issues but also to humanitarian matters and the next steps toward the release of political prisoners,” Tsikhanouskaya said after the meeting.

Tsikhanouskaya expressed confidence that her visit to Rome would open new opportunities for cooperation with Italy.
