Statkevich was sentenced in 2021 in the “Tsikhanouski case” to 14 years in prison on charges of organising mass riots. While in the penal colony, he spent a long time in incommunicado detention. During his imprisonment, he had only one short visit with his wife, in June 2022.

Statkevich was among 52 political prisoners who were released on September 11, 2025. All of the political prisoners were taken to Lithuania. However, Statkevich refused to leave, ran out of the bus, and remained on the territory of Belarus. For several hours, he stayed between two border checkpoints, after which he was taken away by masked individuals.

Media later received information that Statkevich was again being held in prison in Hlubokaye, but this was reliably confirmed only after his release. Marina Adamovich filed a missing person report with the police.

On February 19, his wife reported his release. He is currently at home in Minsk. On January 21, he suffered a stroke and has impaired speech.

Press secretary to Alyaksandr Lukashenka Natallia Eismant stated that he had approved a request from Statkevich’s relatives to release him following his illness.
