On July 26, migrants attempting to enter Lithuania through a tunnel attacked Lithuanian border guards, Delfi reported.
According to the publication, four border guards had set up an ambush near the tunnel. They detained several migrants and handcuffed them, but were then attacked by about 20 foreigners. The officers were forced to retreat, while the migrants, including several who were handcuffed, escaped back into Belarus. No weapons were used during the confrontation.
The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) did not officially report the attack. In its press release, the agency said that as a patrol approached, around 20 migrants retreated deeper into Belarusian territory.
“The tunnel was unfinished and had no exit beyond the patrol trail, so illegal migrants or any other persons had no opportunity to enter our country through this underground route,” the State Border Guard Service said.
In a comment to LRT on Aug. 5, VSAT chief Rustamas Liubajevas confirmed that the incident had indeed taken place. According to him, neither the migrants nor the border guards were injured.
Lithuanian Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas ordered an internal inquiry into the incident to ensure an objective assessment of the actions taken by the border guard service’s leadership.
