Lithuanian border guards have discovered another unfinished tunnel on the border with Belarus.
According to Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service, ground vibrations indicated the construction of an underground passage near the village of Pertaok in Varėna District.
In this area, the border between Lithuania and Belarus runs along an unnamed stream, while the physical barrier is located some distance from the actual border line, where ground conditions allowed it to be built.
According to the border service, as a patrol approached, about 20 foreign nationals retreated deeper into Belarusian territory. At the bank of the stream, 9.5 metres from the fence, officers found the entrance to the tunnel. The tunnel was 11 metres long and ran beneath the road used by border patrols. Logs intended for structural supports, as well as buckets and excavated sand, were found at the site.
“The tunnel was unfinished and did not extend beyond the patrol road, so illegal migrants or any other individuals had no opportunity to enter our country using this underground route,” the State Border Guard Service said.
The tunnel was destroyed.
It should be recalled that a few days earlier, another tunnel was discovered near the village of Piesčiai in the same Varėna District. It was also filled in.
In total, Lithuanian border guards have discovered five tunnels beneath the border this year.
