The Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee for the Vitsyebsk Region has completed its investigation into a road accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian. Charges have been brought against the 50-year-old garbage truck driver, the Investigative Committee said.
The fatal accident occurred on Feb. 18, 2026, in Vitsyebsk. As the garbage truck driver approached the signal-controlled intersection of Tereshkova and Sofyi Pankovai streets, he accelerated to 72.5 km/h and changed into the adjacent lane without using a turn signal, failing to yield to a Volkswagen travelling in the same direction. The collision sent the Volkswagen onto a snowbank, then onto the sidewalk, where it struck a 65-year-old pedestrian. The man died in hospital several days later from his injuries.
A forensic traffic investigation found that the Volkswagen driver had no technical opportunity to avoid hitting the pedestrian.
The garbage truck driver has been charged with violating traffic regulations resulting in the death of a person through negligence. He had previously been repeatedly held administratively liable for traffic violations. The case has been forwarded to the prosecutor for referral to court.
