A parcel of sweets arrived in Lithuania from Canada in May this year, but customs officials found packages containing marijuana inside. A Belarusian and a Ukrainian citizen were detained in connection with the case, the Lithuanian customs service reports.
The parcel arrived at a logistics center of Lithuanian Post. The documents stated that it contained 10 pies and 10 chocolate bars. However, the parcel gave off a distinctive smell of marijuana.
After opening the parcel, Lithuanian customs officials found packages containing cannabis inside the pies. The total weight of the drugs was about 0.5 kg.
A preliminary investigation was launched, and two suspects — citizens of Belarus and Ukraine — were identified. The Belarusian citizen was detained in June in Kupiškis. The Ukrainian citizen actively resisted arrest. Police had to use pepper spray and handcuffs.
At the suspects’ places of residence, investigators found materials for weighing and packaging, bags with magnets for attaching them to metal surfaces, as well as two air guns.
After questioning, the Belarusian citizen was released on a written undertaking not to leave the country. The Ukrainian citizen was remanded in custody for three months. The investigation is continuing under charges related to drug smuggling, unlawful possession of drugs without intent to distribute, and resisting police.
