Customs officers at the Brest border crossing prevented an attempt to smuggle more than 2 kg of mephedrone into Belarus. A Ukrainian citizen entering the country in an Opel declared that he was not carrying any prohibited goods. However, while inspecting his bags, a customs officer noticed concealed inserts in two jackets.
Five plastic bags containing a white crystalline substance were removed from the jackets’ inner linings. An examination confirmed that the seized substance was mephedrone.
During operational search activities, officers identified and detained the intended recipient of the shipment, the State Customs Committee’s press service said.
A criminal case has been opened over the illegal transportation of a large quantity of a psychotropic substance across the Eurasian Economic Union’s customs border. The offence carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
