Belarus Notifies Lithuania of Plans to Build Radioactive Waste Storage Facility

Belarus has notified Lithuania of plans to build a facility for the disposal and temporary storage of radioactive waste.

Belarus’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection has sent a notification to Lithuania’s Ministry of the Environment regarding the environmental impact assessment of the planned economic activity and has asked Lithuania to inform whether it intends to participate in the transboundary environmental impact assessment process.

The Belarusian side has also asked Lithuania to submit comments and proposals on the program for assessing the environmental impact of the planned activity, Lithuania’s Ministry of the Environment said in a press release.

The Lithuanian ministry plans to analyze proposals from Lithuanian agencies and the public and to present Lithuania’s position to Belarus.

The facility is planned to be built in 2028–2030, with commissioning scheduled for 2030. The expected operational lifespan is 100 years.

Lithuania has been provided with the environmental impact assessment program. According to the document, three sites are being considered for construction: Khoiniki District, Astravyets District, and Mstsislau District.
