Belarus and Russia Discuss Border Security

On March 16–17, Minsk hosted a scheduled meeting of special representatives of Belarus and Russia to review the implementation of the intergovernmental Treaty on Security Guarantees within the framework of the Union State.

Belarus was represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Ihar Sakreta, while Russia was represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Grushko. The sides discussed the security situation at the borders of the Union State “in the context of the ongoing militarization of EU and NATO member states.”

They also addressed practical aspects of implementing the Union State Security Concept in the context of fulfilling the Treaty on Security Guarantees. The parties exchanged views on sanctions.

“The participants confirmed the alignment of Belarusian and Russian approaches to current security challenges and threats to the Union State, as well as ways to counter and address them. They emphasized the importance of the Treaty as a solid foundation for deepening cooperation between Belarus and Russia in ensuring the effective protection of the Union State,” the Belarusian Foreign Ministry reported.

The next meeting is scheduled to take place in Moscow in autumn this year.
