The Armenian government led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan officially resigned on the day of the first sitting of the ninth convocation of the National Assembly. The move is required under Article 158 of the country’s Constitution.
Pashinyan announced the decision on his Facebook page. He said he had signed a request asking the president to accept the government’s resignation.
“In accordance with Article 158 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, on the day of the first session of the National Assembly the government submits its resignation to the president of the republic. I am now preparing to sign the government’s resignation in accordance with Article 158 of the Constitution, which is addressed to the president of the Republic of Armenia,” he said.
The Cabinet will continue to perform its duties until a new government is formed. Under Article 149 of Armenia’s Constitution, after the new parliament begins its term, the president must promptly appoint a prime minister nominated by the parliamentary majority.
“Today the parliamentary majority will submit its candidate for prime minister to the president of the republic, and the appointment will be made in accordance with Article 149 of the Constitution,” Pashinyan said.
