A powerful rainstorm that swept across Hrodna and the Hrodna region on Aug. 1 flooded streets, basements of residential and administrative buildings, and toppled dozens of trees.
As the Hrodna City Executive Committee reported, the city’s stormwater drainage system was unable to cope with the heavy rainfall. Roads, sidewalks, underground pedestrian crossings and low-lying areas were flooded, leaving parked cars submerged.
Municipal and emergency services switched to an enhanced operating mode. Crews pumped water from the hardest-hit areas and cleared debris from storm drains. Authorities plan to inspect the affected areas.
According to the Emergency Situations Ministry, 28 mm of rain fell in Hrodna over a three-hour period, compared with the average monthly total of 57 mm. Emergency crews responded to 47 calls to pump water from streets, roadside areas, and the basements of residential and administrative buildings. No injuries were reported.
The storm also damaged the roofs of 20 agricultural buildings — 11 in the Vaukavysk District and nine in the Berastavitsa District. In addition, the roofs of three private homes were damaged — two in Slonim and one in the village of Kaneutsy in the Zelva District.
In eight districts of the region, emergency crews removed 160 fallen trees that had blocked roads and roadways. The largest number of such incidents was recorded in the Astravets District.
In total, 62 emergency vehicles and 178 personnel from the Emergency Situations Ministry were deployed to deal with the aftermath of the storm, making 144 response calls. Monitoring of the situation is continuing.
