“Weather” Plan Activated Across Most of Belarus Due to Heavy Snowstorms

Due to heavy snowstorms and snowdrifts on roads in the Mahilyow, Homyel, Brest and Minsk regions, as well as in the capital, the “Weather” plan has been activated, the Interior Ministry’s press service reported.

Motorists are strongly advised to refrain from using private vehicles and to use public transport instead. The traffic police urged drivers not to park along roadways so as not to interfere with snow-clearing operations and called on all road users to be as attentive and cautious as possible.

Homyelenergo and Mahilyowenergo have switched to a heightened readiness mode.

In all districts of the city of Minsk, equipment has been put into round-the-clock operation to clear snow from residential courtyards, the city housing and utilities services said.

According to the Emergency Situations Ministry, rescuers were required to assist in dealing with the consequences of the bad weather in the Homyel, Mahilyow, Minsk, Brest and Hrodna regions. According to operational information, there were no casualties.

In the Drybin, Kirovsk, Hlusak, Horki, Bykhaŭ, Mahilyow and Chavusy districts, rescuers pulled eight passenger cars out of the snow.

In the Salihorsk district, assistance was provided in towing a car that had slid into a ditch.

In Zhitkavichi, Emergency Situations Ministry units helped tow a bus. There were no passengers inside.

In the village of Pershamaisk in the Stolin district, rescuers were also called to assist after a passenger car became stuck in the snow.
