Belarus Proposes to Simplify Citizenship for Foreign Investors

An expert council under the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus has considered a draft law concerning citizenship issues.

The bill proposes amending the Law On Citizenship of the Republic of Belarus with a provision allowing foreign investors to acquire Belarusian citizenship on preferential terms. At the same time, the document includes mechanisms aimed at reducing the risks of potential abuses in this area, the press service of the House of Representatives reported.

The conditions under which investments would qualify an applicant for citizenship are expected to be regulated by the Regulation on the Procedure for Considering Issues Related to Belarusian Citizenship, approved by presidential decree No. 209 of November 17, 1994, signed by Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

The proposed changes are aimed at “improving the investment climate and supporting the Belarusian economy through external investment.”

Overall, participants in the meeting supported the draft law. A number of remarks were voiced regarding the need for additional justification for its adoption and the practical mechanisms for its implementation.
