Russian Man Who Served Sentence for Comment Detained at Minsk Airport

Russian citizen Ivan Lyubshin was detained at Minsk airport, from where he had planned to fly to Armenia and then to France. He was taken to Russia, OVD-Info reports.

In 2020, Lyubshin was sentenced in Russia to five years and two months in a penal colony for a comment about an explosion at an FSB building. He was tried under an article on justifying terrorism. Lyubshin was released in March 2025 but was required to remain under administrative supervision for a further eight years and report regularly to the police.

Lyubshin planned to emigrate to France. The French embassy in Armenia approved a humanitarian visa for him, which he was due to collect on May 6. He had also purchased a ticket from Yerevan to Paris and booked a hotel.

On the evening of May 1, Lyubshin arrived at Minsk airport. He was due to depart at midnight, but two hours before the flight he was detained by Belarusian border guards. The next day he was taken to the KGB and then transferred to Russia, where he was detained by Russian police.

In Russia, a criminal case was opened against Lyubshin for evading administrative supervision. On March 4, a court placed him under arrest for 12 days.
