A Polish hospital is seeking to recover 78,313 zlotys ($21,400) from TV presenter Katsiaryna Vadanosava through the courts for the treatment of her mother, who died in January. The bill covers surgery, intensive care and post-mortem procedures, Katsiaryna wrote on Facebook.
Vadanosava said that at the time of her stroke and death, her mother was insured through the Petra Medica medical centre. In March, the Office for Foreigners informed Katsiaryna in writing that payment for the medical services was fully the responsibility of Petra Medica. She said she was certain that the relevant documents had also been sent to the hospital.
“Whether the Office for Foreigners failed to send the necessary documents to the hospital where my mother died, whether they were lost, or whether something else happened, today I received a letter from the court. On March 2 (let me remind you, it is now June and I have only just learned about it!), the hospital filed a lawsuit against me to recover 78,313.99 zlotys. This is a bill for surgery, intensive care and post-mortem procedures. The hospital never contacted me, and I was certain that the Office for Foreigners had sent it the same documents it sent to me,” Katsiaryna wrote.
The court also demanded that Vadanosava provide a birth certificate within two weeks. However, the procedure for registering the document with the Polish equivalent of a civil registry office takes a month. Katsiaryna said she had sought assistance from a lawyer.
“I burst into tears at the registry office out of helplessness. I called a wonderful lawyer, and she promised to help me defend myself. I do not have 78,000 zlotys. Moreover, I should not have to pay them. The Office for Foreigners acknowledged its responsibility, acknowledged that it was overseeing my mother’s case and that she had insurance. Furthermore, the letter the hospital sent to the court contains false statements. Of course I will fight this — what other choice do I have? But I am so tired of living through all of this!” Vadanosava wrote.
Nelli Vadanosava, the mother of TV presenter and singer Katsiaryna Vadanosava, died on January 1, 2026, following a stroke. Katsiaryna launched a fundraiser to cover her mother’s treatment and funeral expenses. When it became clear that the medical bills were to be paid by Petra Medica, Katsiaryna donated the remaining funds from the fundraiser to support released political prisoners.
