Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight on Aug. 1. Kyiv and the surrounding Kyiv region were the main targets. According to the latest information, nine people were killed in the capital and dozens were injured, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
According to Zelenskyy, 18 residential buildings, a school, the Lithuanian embassy building and infrastructure facilities were damaged in Kyiv. The strikes also sparked fires in seven districts of the city.
In addition to Kyiv and the Kyiv region, the Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Kharkiv and Poltava regions also came under attack.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces launched 220 aerial attack weapons from the evening of July 31 onward, including 35 missiles of various types and 185 drones. These included 27 ballistic missiles, four anti-ship missiles, as well as cruise missiles and air-launched guided missiles.
According to the military’s preliminary information, air defence forces shot down or suppressed two missiles and 154 drones.
The military reported impacts by 26 ballistic missiles, four anti-ship missiles and 23 attack drones on 21 targets. Another three missiles failed to reach their targets.
“Only one ballistic missile was intercepted overnight simply because there are no missiles left for the Patriot systems. This shortage of ballistic missile interceptors only encourages Russia to carry out such attacks that threaten people’s lives.
It is critically important that our partners hear this: these systems are needed not somewhere in warehouses for possible future scenarios, but here and now, so that Russia’s war can be contained and stopped in Ukraine. Every package with a missile defence system saves the lives of our people. And every night without one results in casualties,” Zelenskyy stressed.
