Pavel Latushka Urges German Ambassador to Avoid Any Deals With Lukashenka Without Political Changes

Deputy Head of the United Transitional Cabinet and head of the National Anti-Crisis Management Pavel Latushka told German Ambassador to Poland Miguel Berger that Western countries must not consider any agreements with Alyaksandr Lukashenka until he undertakes real domestic political changes in the interests of Belarusian society.

The meeting followed consultations held on 20 October at the German Federal Chancellery and the Foreign Ministry. During the talks, Latushka presented the position of the United Transitional Cabinet in light of Lukashenka’s statements about seeking a “big deal” with the United States and the European Union, stressing that no deals should be made with him until he implements genuine political reforms for the benefit of Belarusian society.

The politician also informed the ambassador about ongoing efforts to hold Lukashenka and his close associates accountable for the act of aggression against Ukraine, for the deportation of Ukrainian children, and for crimes against humanity committed against Belarusians.

A separate part of the discussion focused on Germany’s support for Belarusian democratic forces within the OSCE, particularly through the Group of Friends of Democratic Belarus. It was noted that Germany’s Permanent Mission to the OSCE is one of the two members of the group’s secretariat.

Latushka also presented facts and evidence concerning transnational repression against Belarusians forced to live abroad, in the context of the working group on cross-border crimes and transnational repression established by the German Foreign Ministry.

According to the United Transitional Cabinet, Pavel Latushka is continuing a series of consultations with representatives of EU countries. Meetings have already been held with officials from the foreign ministries and ambassadors of France, Germany, Sweden, Cyprus and Latvia. A meeting with the ambassador of Denmark, which currently holds the EU presidency, is expected in the near future.
