Migrants Dig Tunnel Under Lithuanian Border

Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service reported the detention of a group of migrants who used a tunnel dug under the border barrier from the Belarusian side. Polish border guards had previously discovered tunnels on their territory.

The incident took place in the Vilnius district. According to Lithuanian border guards, 30 people emerged within minutes from an underground tunnel near the village of Baravykines. They were spotted using surveillance cameras: the tunnel exit was located several meters from the fence. Border guards from nearby outposts were sent to intercept the migrants. Dog handlers, a helicopter and drones were deployed, while police officers were also involved.

Most of the violators were detained. In addition, border guards detained three foreigners who were supposed to transport the migrants: two Ukrainian citizens and one Georgian citizen. They arrived to pick up the migrants in cars with Polish license plates. The drivers were questioned and their mobile devices were examined.

Later, another Lithuanian citizen was detained while transporting six Afghans.

A total of 27 out of the 30 people who crossed the border were detained. Twenty-four of them have already been returned to Belarus, while two others were taken to hospital because of health problems. The group included citizens of Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan.

Later, a 44-year-old Azerbaijani citizen and a 28-year-old Lithuanian citizen were detained in Klaipėda. They are suspected of involvement in organizing the migration route. Both have been placed in custody.
