“First Lady Melania Trump successfully secured a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, localized to the city of Oleshky. Both nations agreed to temporarily stop all military action in Oleshky to allow for humanitarian aid to enter and to prepare a civilian evacuation through a designated safe passageway,” the White House said in a press release.
Melania Trump and her representative worked directly with the Russian and Ukrainian leadership to establish the terms of the localized ceasefire. Acting in her official capacity as an “Exclusive Intermediary,” the U.S. first lady initiated discussions with both sides and agreed on the objectives of the arrangement, technical procedures, timelines, operational protocols and conditions, the White House said.
Melania Trump noted that the situation in Oleshky was critical.
“The people of Oleshky have limited electricity, live amid mined roads, and endure regular military attacks. It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible,” she said.
During the ceasefire, civilian officials representing both sides will visit Oleshky residents in their homes to determine what assistance they need. Those wishing to evacuate will be provided with transportation to their chosen destinations. Trump stressed that residents would be able to leave for either Ukraine or Russia.
Ukrainian and Russian teams will be accompanied by representatives of an “impartial American media organization,” who will document their work.
