Aliaksandr Karneyeu from Maladzyechna, who had previously been sentenced in absentia, returned to Belarus for unknown reasons. He was tried again under a different article and sentenced to 5.5 years in prison, the Viasna Human Rights Centre reported.
The 34-year-old Karneyeu had been living in Poland. In November 2024, he was tried in absentia on charges of violence or threat of violence against a police officer. The court sentenced him to three years in a medium-security penal colony and ordered him to pay compensation for moral damages of 2,500 roubles.
For unknown reasons, Karneyeu returned to Belarus, where he was tried under charges of assisting “extremist activity” (Parts 1 and 2 of Article 361-4 of the Criminal Code). He received 5.5 years in a medium-security penal colony and a fine of 42,000 roubles.
According to a state newspaper report from December 2025, the criminal case was linked to the organisation “Dapamoga”, which has been designated an “extremist formation”. “The man assisted extremist activity of the extremist formation ‘Dapamoga’ by organising the illegal departure from the Republic of Belarus of individuals brought to criminal and administrative responsibility for committing extremist-related crimes and offences”, the article said.
According to the prosecution, in 2024, while in Poland, Karneyeu handed over a phone to an acquaintance who had been released from a penal colony, and also provided a phone to a man planning to leave for Lithuania.
“Between March 1, 2024 and May 2, 2024, while in Poland, through an acquaintance residing in the city of Maladzyechna, he provided a young man released from prison with communication means, namely a mobile phone equipped with internet access, to contact representatives of an extremist formation. He also passed the young man’s contact details to representatives of the extremist formation ‘Dapamoga’ for further coordination of actions and discussion of details of his illegal departure from the Republic of Belarus to Lithuania.
Similarly, on one of the days in July 2024, but no later than July 30, 2024, with the aim of organising the illegal departure from the Republic of Belarus to Lithuania of another young man who had been held administratively liable, he, with the help of his acquaintance, arranged the transfer of a mobile phone with a foreign SIM card to maintain contact with representatives of the said extremist formation for coordination of actions and discussion of details of the illegal departure from the Republic of Belarus”, the newspaper said.
In April 2026, Karneyeu was added to the “extremist list”.
