Lithuania’s Justice Ministry has sent Belarus an official request for the extradition of Antanas Kandrotas.
“After receiving a request from the Kaunas Regional Court, the Justice Ministry immediately took all possible steps and prepared an official request for the extradition of Antanas Kandrotas. Our goal is to ensure the enforcement of final court judgments and prevent convicted individuals from escaping criminal liability simply because they are in another country,” Deputy Justice Minister Ignas Dobrovolskas said.
Kandrotas traveled to Belarus in June, where he gave an interview to Belarusian state propagandists. He left Lithuania shortly before the Court of Appeal was due to consider his appeal against a previously imposed sentence in a financial crimes case. Kandrotas was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. His appeal was rejected, and the sentence entered into legal force.
In July, Kandrotas participated remotely in hearings on other criminal cases against him. A verdict in one of those cases is expected in September. Two additional cases involving Kandrotas are also pending before the appellate court.
