Tunnels under the Polish border barrier from the Belarusian side are being dug by Kurdish migrants, Poland’s Minister of the Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwiński said on RMF FM radio. According to him, the reward for those who take part in digging the tunnels is the right to be among the first to pass through them. He noted that a day earlier his deputy had mentioned migrants from Syria being involved in digging tunnels.
“Belarusian services are bringing in many Kurds. These were Kurds. I do not know whether all of these tunnels were dug by Kurds, because this is already the fourth tunnel. Migrants from Kurdistan are involved in digging the tunnels. As far as we unofficially know, they have certain preferences when it comes to this — if they take part in digging such a tunnel, they receive the preference of being the first to pass through this tunnel in the queue organized by the Belarusian services,” he said.
According to the minister, the tunnel appears to have been constructed in a highly professional manner. Kierwiński believes that the Belarusian services have recognized the effectiveness of the barrier and are now looking for new methods. At the same time, he said he is confident that the Polish side will also be effective in detecting tunnels. He added that of approximately 180 migrants who passed through the tunnel on Friday, more than 140 have been detained.
“This model of operation remains unchanged. These are illegal migrants transported to Russia or Belarus by Russian or Belarusian services. Nothing is changing here. More than 90 percent are young, healthy men who, if one may put it this way, are being provided with services by Russian or Belarusian services, which supply all the necessary tools, locations, and working conditions,” he said.
