Alyaksandr Lukashenka intends to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump about the situation in Venezuela. He said this in an interview with American journalist Greta van Susteren.
“Nothing is happening yet, but I see the interest of the United States of America in Venezuela. I understand Trump in many ways because Venezuela is nearby, just as Ukraine is near Russia. Therefore, there is interest in many issues. I am absolutely convinced that all issues, all wishes of the United States of America can be resolved today in a completely peaceful way. I think that in the near future we will be able to talk with Donald Trump about this topic, and I will have many interesting things to tell him. War will lead nowhere. Yesterday I told John Coale about this. This, I told him, would be a second Vietnam. Do you need that? You do not. Therefore, there is no need to fight there. It is possible to reach an agreement,” Lukashenka said.
Lukashenka added that he has known Nicolás Maduro “since childhood” and has never spoken with him about fleeing to Belarus.
“So all these idle discussions — I see them — by journalists about us and Maduro allegedly agreeing that he would leave for Belarus and live here, never, Greta, have we spoken with Maduro about this topic. To be frank, we talk more with the Americans about Venezuela than with Maduro about his resignation or any actions,” he said.
Greta van Susteren, the wife of the U.S. president’s special envoy John Coale, was in Minsk from Thursday to Saturday as part of an American delegation and interviewed Lukashenka.
A fragment of the interview was published by Lukashenka’s press service.
