IGFM Will Not Abandon Work on Belarus Despite Social Media Being Declared “Extremist”

The International Society for Human Rights (IGFM) said it will not stop its work on Belarus after Belarusian authorities declared its social media pages “extremist materials.”

“IGFM will not allow itself to be intimidated by this decision and will continue its work on Belarus,” the organization said in a statement published on X.

The authors also stressed that since the falsification of the 2020 elections and the subsequent repression, hundreds of thousands of Belarusians have left the country, while thousands have been sentenced to long prison terms.

“We stand on the side of the courageous Belarusians who defend human rights, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, pluralism and freedom of speech,” the organization said.

IGFM is an international non-governmental non-profit human rights organization founded in West Germany in 1972. It has participatory status with the Council of Europe and is a member of the Liaison Committee with non-governmental organizations at the Council of Europe.

It should be recalled that Belarusian authorities regularly use accusations of extremism to combat political opponents and dissent in general.
