Council of Europe Congress Secretary General Backs Coordination Council Elections

The Secretary General of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe Mathieu Mori expressed support for the elections to the Coordination Council, scheduled to take place from May 11 to 17:

“The elections to the Coordination Council are a clear signal to the Lukashenka regime and the international community of the unwavering commitment of the Belarusian people to democratic values,” Mori said.

According to him, the elections to the Coordination Council are not only an act of resistance but also another brick in the foundation of a future democratic Belarus.

“Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of any democratic system. They are the most direct way for citizens to express their views, essential for the legitimacy of democratic institutions. Without transparency, fairness and genuine choice at the ballot box, neither the rule of law nor human rights can fully flourish. These elections to the Coordination Council are more than an act of resistance to authoritarianism. They represent the deliberate construction of a future democratic Belarus,” he added.

“By organising, deliberating and cooperating openly, Belarusian democratic forces are laying the institutional foundations necessary for a credible democratic transition. For voters, each ballot cast is a building block in the foundation of a free, sovereign and European Belarus. The Congress stands with you and fully supports your efforts to determine your democratic future. Zhive Belarus,” Mori concluded.
