Convicted Defendants In “Black Nightingales” Case Added To ‘Terrorist’ List

Belarus’ State Security Committee has added nine more people to its list of “individuals involved in terrorist activity.”

Among them are those convicted in the “Black Nightingales” case: Maryia Misiuk, Dzmitry Zakharoshka, Trafim Barysau, Siarhei Zhihaleu and Aliaksandra Pulinovich.

The defendants in the “Black Nightingales” case were detained in the spring of 2024. At that time, state television aired a propaganda film titled “Children In The Crosshairs. Recruited By The Enemy,” which reported the detention of seven teenagers for “cooperation with Ukrainian special services.” Some of them were accused of an “act of terrorism” and “high treason.” The film claimed that six teenagers had allegedly formed an “anarchist cell ‘Black Nightingales,’” which was said to have been created “under the leadership of the National Liberation Army of Ukraine” by 16-year-old Ukrainian citizen Maryia Misiuk.

In November last year, Maryia was released and transferred to Ukraine.

The updated KGB list also includes Aliaksandr Kanavalchyk, Tatsiana Magnusava, Raman Makhankou, Aliaksandr Miedzved, Tatsiana Shchetka and Aliaksandr Khazeeu.

At present, the “terrorist list” contains 1,417 individuals, around 700 of whom are Belarusians.

Belarusian authorities regularly use accusations of extremism and terrorism to target political opponents and dissent more broadly.
