Belarus and Russia plan to sign a working agreement by the end of 2026 on the construction of a third power unit with a capacity of 1,200 MW, the Belarusian Energy Ministry reported. The document is being prepared jointly with Rosatom.
In parallel, plans for a second nuclear power plant are being considered. The ministry named the Mahilyow region as the most promising site. The new capacity is being designed with projected growth in electricity consumption after 2040 in mind.
“In 2025, the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant generated 17 billion kWh — 40% of the country’s total electricity output,” the ministry said.
It was reported in November last year that a decision had been made to build a third power unit at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant site.
Speaking about the prospects of constructing another nuclear power plant in Belarus, Aliaksandr Lukashenka expressed hope that he would be able to persuade Russia to build it so that he could earn revenue from electricity sales to Russia’s southwest.
In March last year, addressing Russia’s Federation Council, Lukashenka said that if a second plant were built, he would be able to supply electricity to the Bryansk region and the “new regions of Russia.” Later, during talks with Putin, Lukashenka said that a plant in eastern Belarus could be built to “supply electricity to territories liberated by Russia — Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk and Donetsk.”
