Cyclone “Priska” Leaves 148 Belarusian Communities Without Power

Strong winds accompanying Cyclone “Priska” disrupted power supplies in several regions of Belarus. The main cause of the outages was broken power lines caused by falling trees.

According to Belenergo, as of 3 p.m., power supply disruptions had been recorded in 148 communities. A special operating regime has been introduced in the Hrodna, Vitsyebsk and Brest regions. A total of 185 emergency crews and 220 vehicles and pieces of equipment have been deployed to deal with the consequences of the bad weather. The work is being complicated by the large number of trees and branches that have fallen on power lines.

In the Hrodna region, the Hrodna, Shchuchyn, Masty and Voranava districts were the hardest hit by the bad weather. According to Hrodnaenergo, power supplies have been disrupted in more than 30 communities in the region. Emergency crews and special equipment have been deployed to restore 10 kV lines.

Meteorologists have issued orange and red weather warnings. Wind gusts may reach 27 m/s.

Energy workers reminded residents that broken wires may carry life-threatening voltage. If damaged lines are found, people must not approach them closer than 8 meters. Incidents should be reported by calling 115 or 144.
