BELPOL Hands Ukraine New Evidence of the Lukashenka Regime’s Involvement in the War

Representatives of BELPOL visited Kyiv, where they held meetings with officials from Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence and other state bodies. The main topics were the growing militarisation of Belarus and the responsibility of the regime of Aliaksandr Lukashenka for supporting Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the organisation said.

According to BELPOL, Belarus has effectively lost a significant part of its military sovereignty and is becoming increasingly integrated into Russia’s military infrastructure. The organisation says it has long documented the construction of new military infrastructure facilities and the expansion of the country’s existing military capabilities.

As part of the visit, a roundtable discussion was held at the Mission of the Belarusian Democratic Forces in Kyiv, focusing on trends in the militarisation of Belarus and the associated risks for the region. Part of the discussion took place behind closed doors with the participation of Ukrainian and international partners.

One of the key outcomes of the visit was the transfer of an updated package of evidence to the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine concerning the Lukashenka regime’s involvement in the war against Ukraine. According to BELPOL, the package contains nearly hundreds of documents relevant to the legal assessment of the regime’s actions.

A meeting was also held with Yaroslav Chornohor, Ambassador-at-Large of Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry for Democratic Transformation Issues. The participants discussed prospects for cooperation, support for democratic change in Belarus and the possibility of introducing new sanctions in coordination with the European Union.

The issue of Belarusian citizens who have ended up in captivity under Russian occupation forces also featured prominently on the agenda. During a meeting with an adviser to the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, participants discussed efforts to obtain information about these individuals, provide them with support and coordinate measures aimed at securing their return to Ukraine.
