On February 3 in Kyiv, legal adviser to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya Leanid Marozau, social policy representative of the United Transitional Cabinet Volha Zazulinskaya, and representative of the Belarusian democratic forces in Ukraine Svetlana Shatilina held a working meeting with the Secretariat of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.
The sides discussed the human rights situation in Belarus and, in particular, the situation of political prisoners, including Ukrainian citizens. They also discussed the situation of Belarusians persecuted for opposing the regimes of Lukashenka and Putin after the start of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine, as well as humanitarian and human rights-based approaches to such cases, the Tsikhanouskaya Office reported.
Participants in the meeting considered the issue of the forced removal of Belarusian political prisoners abroad, including through the territory of Ukraine, and discussed possible coordination of actions if such practices continue.
“It is fundamentally important for us to build direct and systematic cooperation with Ukrainian institutions on the protection of human rights. We are talking not only about solidarity, but also about specific response mechanisms — with regard to political prisoners, cross-border repression, and forced displacement. In these matters, coordination with the office of the Ukrainian Ombudsman is of key importance.
We are grateful to the Secretariat of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights for the constructive meeting and readiness for further cooperation,” Morozau said.
