Belarus is preparing to close its embassy in Equatorial Guinea. A resolution bearing the corresponding title has been registered in the National Register of Legal Acts.
Resolution No. 315 of the Council of Ministers, titled “On the Closure of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea”, is dated June 24. It has not yet been officially published.
An agreement to exchange embassies between Belarus and Equatorial Guinea was reached in 2023. During a visit to Minsk, Equatorial Guinean President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo announced the plans.
In December 2023, the Council of Ministers adopted a resolution providing for the opening of the embassy by August 1, 2024. In June 2024, the Council of Ministers approved the salary of the ambassador to Equatorial Guinea.
However, no announcement was ever made regarding the opening of the embassy or the appointment of an ambassador, and the Foreign Ministry’s website contains no information about such a diplomatic mission. Belarus is currently represented in Equatorial Guinea at the level of chargé d’affaires. The position is held by Uladzislau Zhur. On June 10, he met with the country’s vice president, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue. The sides discussed the implementation of agreements reached in 2023.
