Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a meeting with U.S. representatives will take place in the near future, during which the American side will present new proposals for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The Ukrainian president said he had spoken on Wednesday with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation was attended by the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine and other officials.
“The United States has developed several proposals, several plans for ending the war. They will share these ideas with us. We will have a meeting. I think they want to share them with both us and the Russians. When will this meeting take place? I don’t know. I think it will most likely be held in the United States. The American side has, of course, invited us. There are several possible dates, and we just need to make sure they fit everyone’s schedules. I think the meeting could take place in the coming days or within the next week,” Zelenskyy said.
Earlier on Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. After the meeting on the sidelines of an ASEAN event in the Philippines, Rubio said that new ideas would be needed to achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, Ukraine would not accept the Anchorage proposals, but the United States is prepared to offer the parties new options.
According to Ukrinform, Zelenskyy is also hoping for a trilateral meeting. He said it should take place before the autumn.
“It certainly needs to happen before the autumn. I believe we must work persistently on this. If it depended on us, it would have taken place back in July. But not everything depends on us,” he added.
