Belarusian Interior Minister Ivan Kubrakou instructed officials at a meeting of the Mahiliou regional police directorate to investigate social media posts about police officers.
“I have instructed that all such materials be examined, and where the facts are confirmed, a principled assessment of law enforcement officers’ actions should be made, including holding them accountable where appropriate. However, in most cases the information is not confirmed, and such online disinformation should not go unanswered by us,” he said, according to the Interior Ministry’s press service.
According to the minister, a recent post about the police in Vaukavysk turned out to be false.
“A recent example is the falsehood about the Vaukavysk police. It was picked up by other users, and some even shared their own stories, which also deserve to be verified, about their interactions with law enforcement. In this way, these people sought to discredit the police.
The individual who spread insulting claims about the Vaukavysk police has already been identified. The person, who is on an international wanted list, including for serious crimes, lives in Poland. He is mistaken if he believes he is beyond reach there — prosecutors are already initiating a criminal case. Measures will also be taken against those who amplified the false information,” the minister added.
