https://reform.news/en/vucic-loses-serbia-s-parliamentary-election/Former Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić is losing the parliamentary election. According to the Republic Electoral Commission, with ballots counted from 90.5% of polling stations, his “United Serbia” coalition received 39.98% of the vote, while the “Student List”, an opposition bloc formed out of the protest movement that emerged after the tragedy in Novi Sad, received 51.5%.
No other party or coalition contesting the election managed to cross the 3% electoral threshold. As a result, only two political forces entered parliament.
Voter turnout in Serbia reached a record 68.58%.
Vučić conceded defeat before the vote count was complete.
“We do not yet have the final results, but… it is clear that we have lost this election. The ‘Student List’ has won: they will get between 135 and 140 seats, while we will have 105. No one else has entered parliament,” he said.
Vučić served as Serbia’s prime minister from 2014 to 2016. He became president in June 2017. In September this year, before his second term was due to end in May 2027, he stepped down, intending to win as leader of “United Serbia” and become prime minister. Vučić was not eligible to run for a third presidential term.
The presidents of the European Council and the European Commission have already congratulated the “Student List” on its victory.
“Congratulations to the Student List on its victory in the parliamentary elections. We stand ready to support reforms on the rule of law, media freedom, the fight against corruption and strong democratic institutions, and to work together to advance Serbia’s future in the European Union,” Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa wrote on X.
