Vilnius Airport was again shut down overnight today because of smugglers’ weather balloons. The Lithuanian capital’s airport was closed for one hour, from 2:16 a.m. to 3:16 a.m.
The airport suspended operations “in connection with a hybrid attack carried out by Belarus against Lithuania, civil aviation and the population, following the detection of navigation signals characteristic of balloons in zones posing elevated risks to aviation”.
Two flights were affected. One flight had to be cancelled, while another was redirected to Copenhagen Airport. In total, 128 passengers were affected by the disruption.
The previous disruption to operations at Vilnius Airport was recorded in early April.
