Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with European Humanities University (EHU) Rector Vilius Šadauskas and Chairman of the University’s Supervisory Board Mantas Adomėnas.

“Both EHU graduates and lecturers work on my team. I know how much this university has given Belarusians, and I want future generations of students to have the same opportunity. Talented students should be able to study regardless of their families’ income, and Belarusian lecturers should be able to continue their work. And, of course, it is important to us that the university preserves its Belarusian mission and focus. We will continue consultations with the university’s leadership, and I hope we will communicate and cooperate more,” Tsikhanouskaya said.

She stressed that EHU is of great value to Belarusian society and must be preserved as a Belarusian university within the European educational space, while maintaining its Belarusian mission and focus.

The parties discussed the development of Belarusian-language programmes at EHU, the teaching of the Belarusian language and greater involvement of Belarusians in decision-making. They also discussed consultations on the university’s future with representatives of Belarusian civil society and academia. Tsikhanouskaya had previously sent EHU a letter containing proposals for the institution’s development.

She also stressed the importance of supporting Belarusian EHU students, graduates and lecturers who have already faced repression and cannot return home following the designation of the university as an “extremist organisation”. The discussions also covered the safety of students and prospective students, as well as issues related to legal residence status for students and staff in Lithuania.
