Head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya discussed support for Belarusian culture with representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The meeting was attended by PACE rapporteur Agnieszka Pomaska and head of the secretariat of the PACE Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media Tatiana Termacic.
The talks took place as part of preparations for a report titled “Culture as the Basis for the Democratization of Belarus.” Its authors intend to draw the attention of Council of Europe countries to the situation of Belarusian culture and prepare recommendations for supporting it, including within Belarus.
The sides discussed the state of the Belarusian language and culture, the situation of cultural figures in Belarus and abroad, as well as possible support from European countries.
The report is expected to examine the role of culture in a democratic society, Russification and the influence of Russian propaganda, the status of the Belarusian language, repression against cultural figures and political prisoners, the development of Belarusian culture in exile, and transnational repression.
As part of the preparation of the document, its authors will also hold meetings with Belarusian cultural organizations and representatives of various fields of culture, the United Transitional Cabinet’s press service reported.
