Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin today.

“The conversation followed the meeting in Oslo on October 20 and was held in consultation with Ukraine. The call was initiated by President Stubb and Prime Minister Støre, who discussed Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, as well as diplomatic efforts to end the war and promote peace and stability in Europe,” the Finnish president’s press service said in a statement.

The statement also noted that Finland and Norway are neighbors of Russia but are also staunch supporters of Ukraine.

“The purpose of the conversation was to convey information directly to President Putin about upcoming negotiations to end the war. The call was part of preparations for the forthcoming meeting scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi,” the statement said.

The Finnish president’s press service emphasized that Stubb and Støre spoke on behalf of their own countries and did not represent Europe. Finland and Norway have always sought peace and security in the region. Both countries have an interest in stability and predictability in the Baltic Sea region and the north. This was also emphasized during the conversation.

Stubb and Støre also stressed that Finland and Norway would continue their longstanding support for Ukraine, that the war must end, and that negotiations must continue.

“The conversation was open and substantive. We are countries that share a border with Russia. The outcome of the war will have a direct impact on our security and the security of Europe. Direct negotiations are necessary to end the war,” President Stubb said.

“The war is causing enormous human and material losses. The suffering and destruction will have consequences for future generations. During the conversation, we emphasized the importance of de-escalating the conflict,” Prime Minister Støre said.

The conversation took place during the Norwegian prime minister’s visit to Helsinki.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the call during a briefing. An official statement about it is expected to be published later.
