Trip Across Polish-Belarusian Border Ends in Criminal Case for Ukrainian Citizen

A Ukrainian citizen has become the subject of a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 228 of Belarus’s Criminal Code, “Illegal Movement of Cash Across the Customs Border of the Eurasian Economic Union”.

According to the State Customs Committee, the 60-year-old Ukrainian citizen was travelling across the border by bus with his parents. All three chose the green channel at the Brest checkpoint and told the customs inspector that each of them was carrying no more than $10,000.

The man’s parents were indeed carrying the declared amounts, but customs officers found the equivalent of $31,000 hidden in his clothing.

The State Customs Committee reminded travellers that no more than $10,000 in cash can be transported across the border without declaration, while carrying more than $30,000 without declaring it can lead to criminal liability.
