Three Bodies Found at Bottom of Kurumdu Gorge in Kyrgyzstan

Three bodies have been found at the bottom of the Kurumdy Gorge in Kyrgyzstan. Federation of Mountaineering head Eduard Kubatov said they are highly likely to be those of two mountaineers from Belarus and a Lithuanian citizen who went missing while climbing the peak, News.kg reports.

“The search operation has ended. We have now confirmed the presence of three bodies at the bottom of the Kurumdy Gorge. There is a high probability that these bodies belong to two mountaineers from Belarus and Lithuania. But we can only say ‘with a high degree of probability,’” Kubatov said.

According to him, further operations are complicated by weather conditions. Rescuers are waiting for stable weather in the area of Kurumdy Peak, after which they plan to establish the identities of the deceased and arrange for the bodies to be transported to Osh.

“This is also a fairly complicated operation. We are waiting for stable weather and will continue the work. Conditions in the mountains are currently unstable, and the mountaineering season has ended. The altitude is around 6,500 meters,” the head of the Federation of Mountaineering said.

Belarusians Maksim Palianski and Mikalai Svirydau, as well as Lithuanian citizen Sergey Rubtsov, have been out of contact since Aug. 2. The group was climbing Kurumdy Peak along the northern ridge. On Aug. 1 at 10:30 a.m., the mountaineers reached the summit of Kurumdy Peak. They were last in contact on Aug. 2. The group said it would be ready to leave after descending on Aug. 4, but never reached the designated meeting point.
