The Supreme Court will begin hearing a new case on charges of genocide of the Belarusian people during World War II on March 18.
According to the court’s press service, Antanas Gecevicius is accused in the case. The Prosecutor General’s Office sent the case to court in early February. During World War II he commanded one of the platoons of the first company of the 12th Security Battalion and participated in the shooting of at least 6,000 people.
Previously, verdicts in genocide cases were issued against the deceased Vladimir Katryuk, Konstantin Smovsky, Semyon Serafimovich, Osip Vinnitsky and Alexander Yermolchik. On March 11, the Supreme Court is expected to announce a verdict in the criminal case against Hans Siegling, who served in the SS and the security police.
When such cases involve deceased persons, the court issues a guilty verdict without imposing a sentence.
