Lithuanian Border Guards Detain Cigarette Smuggler on Electric Scooter

Lithuanian border guards have detained two smugglers who were attempting to collect cigarettes thrown across the border from Belarus.

On Saturday evening, border guards received operational information and set up an ambush near the village of Žviriai, a couple of kilometers from the Belarusian border, to verify it.

Shortly after midnight, a man riding an electric scooter appeared on the road. Some time later, a van with Lithuanian license plates arrived. Border guards then observed the men loading boxes into the van. When the officers emerged from the ambush, one of the men attempted to flee but was stopped with the assistance of a service dog. The second resisted arrest near the van.

In total, officers seized 29 boxes of cigarettes, the van, and two electric scooters. The two men were placed in temporary detention.
