Suburban Rail Links Between Belarus and Russia Set for Expansion

Suburban rail connections between regions of Belarus and Russia may be expanded by the end of 2026. This was stated by the State Secretary of the Union State Sergei Glazyev at an event in Moscow dedicated to the “Day of Unity of the Peoples of Belarus and Russia,” BelTA reports.

According to him, the routes launched today between Smolensk and Viciebsk, as well as Smolensk and Orsha, are a pilot project. By the end of the year, it is planned to refine the transportation mechanism, assess demand and evaluate the competitiveness of the service. One of the key tasks during the preparation of the project was to ensure benefits for all categories of passengers applicable in both countries.

“Based on the results of this year, other routes will be considered, in particular Pskov–Polatsk. I think other neighboring regions will also be connected,” Glazyev noted.
