Twelve people were killed and another 48 injured in a crash involving a Polish bus in Hungary, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said.
The crash occurred at around 1 a.m. on Aug. 16 on the M3 motorway near Mezőkeresztes and Mezőnagymihály. The bus, traveling from Serbia to Poland, left the road and overturned in a ditch.
There were 57 passengers and two drivers on the bus. According to data from Hungary’s emergency services, 11 people died at the scene and another died after being taken to hospital.
Eleven people suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. Another 37 passengers were hospitalized with minor injuries. The injured were taken to hospitals in Eger, Debrecen, Nyíregyháza and Miskolc.
Several people were trapped under the bus. Firefighters used a winch to lift the rear of the 24-ton bus to gain access to the victims. Two mobile cranes then lifted the bus from the slope and placed it back on its wheels.
Donald Tusk said Poland would send a special aircraft to Hungary carrying representatives of the Foreign Ministry and medical services. The injured will be provided with the necessary medical and consular assistance.
