The initiative was raised during a meeting with Pavel Latushka, Deputy Head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus.
The parties discussed support for Belarusian cultural and media projects.
The proposal to open a representative office of Belarus’s democratic forces was made in view of the fact that official delegations of the Belarusian Coordination Council are working in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, the United Transitional Cabinet noted.
Latushka also asked Strasbourg City Hall to help organise an exhibition and a screening of a film about widespread repression and human rights violations in Belarus, including the persecution of cultural figures. Moritz confirmed that the city administration was ready to support these events during the spring session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in 2027, when a report entitled “Culture as the Foundation for the Democratisation of Belarus” is scheduled to be considered.
In addition, the deputy mayor proposed holding an event at the Strasbourg Press Club featuring independent Belarusian media outlets. It would focus on the state of press freedom in Belarus and the persecution of independent journalists.
Moritz said Strasbourg would continue to support projects aimed at raising awareness of violations of human rights and freedoms in Belarus.
