People from as many as 27 countries may be among those killed in the train disaster in Spain. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced this at a press conference.

“The victims are not only Spanish citizens. We also have up to 27 nationalities whose citizens may have died in this railway tragedy,” he said.

The disaster occurred on October 28 near the town of Urda in the province of Toledo. Two high-speed trains travelling from Madrid to Seville collided there. One train stopped on the tracks, and the train behind it crashed into it at a speed of more than 100 km/h. At least 69 people were killed.

The Civil Guard is treating an operator at the control centre of infrastructure company Adif as a suspect. The operator authorised a Renfe AVE train to proceed even though an Iryo train had already stopped further ahead on the tracks. The operator was summoned for questioning today but refused to give a statement.
