During the night of March 5, amid another Russian air attack on Ukraine, the Ukrainian monitoring channel eRadar recorded the appearance of atypical aerial objects over Chernihiv Region. The information was highlighted by the outlet “Flagstok”.
According to observers, the objects may have been balloons with corner reflectors launched from the territory of Belarus.
According to the monitoring channel, there were about ten balloons. They began entering Ukrainian airspace at around 01:00–01:10 near Loyew from the direction of Brahin District in Homiel Region. The wind direction that night coincided with this trajectory — it was westerly, blowing from Brahin and Loyew districts toward Chernihiv Region.
Balloons with corner reflectors are used to simulate false aerial targets in order to detect and exhaust the enemy’s air defense system. It is assumed that this was their intended purpose. What happened to the balloons afterward is not known for certain. It has previously been reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine also use similar tactics.
