Ryzhankou Hopes for Restoration of “Normal Relations” With Poland

Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryzhankou says he hopes that the reopening of two checkpoints on the Polish-Belarusian border will lead to the restoration of “normal relations” between Belarus and Poland.

“It is good that they demonstrated such consistency in their ideas,” Ryzhankou said, commenting on Poland’s decision to reopen the Kuźnica and Bobrowniki crossings.

“It is very important when politicians listen to the views of their people and deliver on what they promise. In addition, the resumption of movement through border checkpoints is very important in general for, as we see it, restoring normal relations between the countries.

Because relations between ordinary people always come first, followed by relations between business representatives. And then politicians catch up. So it is very good that the overall atmosphere, the background, is quite positive. I saw reports from the border today. People are very happy. In fact, this should have been done long ago,” Ryzhankou told the Telegram channel *Vremya Pervogo*.

The foreign minister also said that Poland had demonstrated to Lithuania what he called “tough, normal pragmatism.”

Poland reopened two checkpoints on the Belarusian border — Kuźnica and Bobrowniki — on 17 November. Poland said it expected to see the effects of this step in the coming weeks and months. Lithuania has indicated it may reopen its checkpoints on the Belarusian border before 30 November, depending on the situation.
